San Diego Restaurateur Katakalidis Addresses CIA Graduation

Hyde Park, NY. George Katakalidis, a former professional soccer player who is the founder and CEO of the Daphne's Greek Cafe restaurant chain, addressed associate degree recipients at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) on Friday, September 8, 2006. "In my years of travel, I got a unique perspective on how people live, what they like, and what they're all about," Mr. Katakalidis told 68 graduates in Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts. "As you know, we are in the people-pleasing business. Use the education and knowledge you received at the CIA to make the world a better place, one plate at a time." Mr. Katakalidis was the captain of the Canadian National Youth Soccer Team before embarking on a professional career in indoor soccer with the New York Arrows, San Jose Earthquakes, and San Diego Sockers. He retired in the late 1980s after suffering a broken toe, then opened the first Daphne's in San Diego in 1991. He has since turned it into the largest casual Greek restaurant chain in North America, with nearly 70 units in California and Arizona. The CIA held a second graduation on September 8, at which 64 students received their baccalaureate degrees in Culinary Arts Management and Baking and Pastry Arts Management.

MESA, AZ – August 23, 2006 – On August 15th, Daphne’s Greek Cafe celebrated the grand opening of the restaurant’s Mesa, Arizona location by hosting a Big Fat Greek Fundraiser in support of Gabriel’s Angels. The restaurant, located in The Village at Dana Park, donated 20% of the day’s sales to the organization, resulting in over a $700 contribution. Pamela Gaber, founder and director of Gabriel’s Angels commented “What a wonderful opportunity for us, to not only raise funds, but to gain a new partner in the community. I sincerely thank Daphne’s Greek Cafe and their team members for so generously donating to our organization.” By its mission, Gabriel’s Angels serves abused, neglected and at-risk children in Maricopa County by provide healing pet therapy to nurture their ability to love and trust, thereby freeing them from the cycle of violence. “Daphne’s Greek Cafe is proud to support Gabriel’s Angels,” stated George Katakalidis, founder and CEO of Daphne’s Greek Cafe. “It is exciting to team up with our guests in an effort to raise awareness and to positively impact the children of our communities.” A hosted VIP reception was held from 5:00 - 8:00 PM and attended by over 200 guests, with many more guests making donations throughout the day.
